BEFORE. Me and Mr Paddington Bear in London. Unfocused photo but you’ll get the point. The reason for my short hair is that it was so dry I had no choice but to cut it.

What Will Happen If I Stop Washing My Hair? Does it start to look oily and dirty? Does it start to smell? Will I loose all my friends as a result of a bad personal hygiene? These are some of the questions that might come to mind, when thinking of not to wash your hair. Actually the headline of this post is a bit misleading, I never stopped washing my hair. I just stopped using shampoo, conditioner and other hair products. OK I still dye my hair, but that’s only chemical I use.

Why did I come to this, some might ask. Let me tell you a bit of my hair history. I started to dye my hair at the age of 12, I have always used shampoo and conditioner, during my adult life I have used a lot of money to different hair products, and the result? My hair has always been really dry. So the drier my hair become, the more I spend on conditioners. It’s a bad circle!

My husband

My husband has a really nice hair, it’s in a good condition. What does he do to maintain his hair in such a great condition? The answer is, absolutely nothing! He is working in the jungle and he noticed that the indigenous people living there have really shiny hair. He thought probably it’s because thy don’t use hair products and decided to try it out himself too. He said he noticed improvement in the condition of his hair really quickly. He told me that I should do the same and I was really skeptical.  I was thinking he’s hair is good because he just has good quality hair naturally. I was thinking if I stop using conditioner, that’s going to be the end of my hair. But I decided to give it a try and I’m happy I did.

Machu Picchu

BEFORE: This is the worst hair picture of me, ever!!! 10 days trekking at the Andes, and after that my hair was a total disaster…

Before trying to live without a shampoo, I Googled about experiences, and I only found positive comments. People told their hair had become healthier and shinier, so it sounded really promising. Also I found out that many people use sodium bicarbonate and apple cider vinegar to clean the dirt out of the scalp. It’s easy, just mix some baking soda with water in one bottle and some apple cider vinegar, also with water, into another bottle. Wash the scalp first with the baking soda and then again with the vinegar. Rinse well. Like this the scalp become clean, but your hair don’t loose the oils that keep’s it shiny and healthy. Also I read, that the first two weeks can be annoying as the scalp is trying to adjust to the new situation and starts to produce more oil, but for me this never happened.

The results look promising. After I stopped washing my hair with shampoo it’s started to recover, it looks better and also feels stronger. Am I going back to the shampoo and conditioner cycle? Hell no! Is my hair stinky now? Sure not! Does it look dirty? Well see the pictures below and let me know on the comment box below! I hope you find this post useful. I wish I’d known this before, it would of saved a lot of money and trouble of finding the perfect conditioner. I would recommend for you too to stop washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, it just seems to be a marketing ploy for the cosmetic industry!
